Digital storytelling combined photographs, narrative and interpretation to communicate fieldwork learning in a creative, assessed format. The task encouraged reflection on personal learning and connection to place.
Students produced short digital stories using field photographs, voiceover and simple editing tools. Assessment criteria focused on clarity, evidence and interpretation rather than technical polish.
Key outcomes included:
- students articulating what they had learned more clearly than in traditional reports,
- stronger links between field observations and course concepts, and
- increased motivation to produce work that could be shared beyond the module.
The approach worked well for both formative and summative assessment, and could be adapted to different disciplines and field contexts.
